These many types of bonsai trees can be categorized into different styles namely formal upright, informal upright, cascade, semi cascade, slant, and windswept. These styles are what experts will make when they are shaping, training, and forming a bonsai.

If you are a beginner in this art of bonsai making, formal upright is the best style to practice with. In this style, the trunk of the tree is straight upwards and the first lower branches are much wider than the remaining branches. These remaining branches shape an overall triangular look for the tree. Types of bonsai trees that are suitable for this style are Pine, Larch, Juniper, and Spruce.

Other common styles are the informal upright and the slant style. The former is similar to the formal upright and the main difference is that the top branch should be extended forward rather than upwards. This style makes the tree has an impression of motion. The latter style, on the other hand, makes the tree trunk extends to one direction while the lowest branches extend to the opposite direction. These two styles are also relatively easy to train. Beech, Japanese maple, and trident maple trees are suitable for informal upright style, while the slant type basically can be done on most bonsai trees.

The cascade and semi cascade are other types of bonsai trees styles. Bonsai trees that are trained with cascade types have a sloping effect. The trunk is vertical and afterwards is turned to one direction. The branches are trained to slope or cascade lower than the surface of the pot. The semi cascade has the same basic as the previous style except that the trunk gradually slopes rather than turns to one direction.

The last style is the windswept style which makes the tree appears like it has been beset by strong winds. Some people think that this style looks unruly and unkempt, but when properly done it will have unique appearance. These are common styles and types of bonsai trees that have been practiced for many centuries as an art form that has decorated numerous houses and gardens.
