They are the selection of the containers, how the plant was positioned within the container, and the choice of the plant variety.

Flowering bonsai comes in four different sizes. They are miniature, small, medium, and average size. Miniature bonsai is around two inches in height and the plant can achieve this height within two years. Small bonsai can grow from two to six inches in height, which may need around five to ten years to reach maturity. Medium bonsai grows from six to twelve inches in height and usually will fully grow within three years. The last one, the average sized flowering bonsai can grow to around two feet in height and reach maturity within three years.

The next thing that you should understand is two basic styles of growing flowering bonsai plants. The first one is the classic style or sometimes known as Koten. It has a wider trunk at the base and becomes thinner towards the top. The second style is the informal style, which is known as comic or Bunkin. The characteristic is the opposite of the first style where it has wider top end than the trunk.

Common flowering bonsai plants

Mt. Fuji Serissa is well known for its white colorings on the outer edges of the leaves. It prefers warm weather and likes a lot of sunlight so you should locate the plant in a correct place in your garden. Normally it blooms a single white flower during summer. You should wait the soil to dry before you water the plant again.

Flowering Quince is another common flowering bonsai plant. It comes from Asian countries and this is one of the most favorite bonsai plants in the world. The leaves have tiny teeth along with white and red flowers that grow in tight clusters on bare branches. The plant produces green and yellow fruits, which usually are tough. Flowering Quince likes sunlight and well-drained soil before you start watering again. Over watering is very harmful for the plant.

The last common flowering bonsai is the Okinawa Holly. It has small pink flowers that usually bloom during spring and summer. This plant is resilient, but it will grow best in temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees of Fahrenheit. You need to spray misted the plant everyday from spring to fall with twice a day during winter.
