There many types of bonsai trees and one of the most popular types is the Cypress bonsai. Before discussing further on the Cypress bonsai, we should briefly discuss about bonsai in general. Bonsai is a term used to describe the growing of miniature trees. A bonsai tree is not a genetically dwarfed tree, but a tree that has undergone special planting and maintenance to keep it small. You need to have the right combination of pot confinement and the pruning of the crown and the root to grow a bonsai tree. With proper training and care, most trees can become a bonsai after some time.
As one type of bonsai, the Cypress bonsai is available in formal upright style or slant style. As its name implies, the characteristics of formal upright style are straight, upright, and tapering trunks. There may be certain bends and curves on the trunks and branches of this type of Cypress bonsai, but the actual apex is always located directly over the roots.
The second style, the slant of Cypress bonsai, is actually similar to the formal upright style. The only difference is that the trunk emerges from the soil at an angle instead of straight up. Typically, the apex of this style of bonsai will extend to the right or left of the root base.
In order to grow Cypress bonsai, there is certain care and maintenance that need to be done. These things are vital to the successfulness of growing bonsai. One thing that you should remember is that a bonsai prefers the morning sun. You should not expose it to the afternoon sun, especially during summer season. If you place the bonsai near a wall, you should remember to turn it around regularly. If you forget to do this, the tree will grow out of shape because as other plants, a bonsai will tend to grow towards the light.
Another important factor to grow Cypress bonsai is correct watering because it obviously will need more water in the summer than in the winter. You should understand that if the trees have more leaves, they will need more water as well. When you become familiar with your bonsai tree, you will be able to determine whether your tree needs watering or not from the weight of the pot. These two factors are important to increase the chance of survival of your Cypress bonsai.
